A study in utilitarian beauty.
This design ideal is evident from every perspective. From its straight, hand-finished front legs to its curved rear legs – which extend to support the crest – the Harpswell Stool is a statement in minimalism. Even the chair rails, including a steam-bent curve that supports both sides and back, and a front rail situated for resting feet, are studies in utilitarian beauty.
Upon reaching the seat, the choice of upholstery seems both deliberate and appropriate. Covered in either fabric or leather, the cushion forms a welcome contrast to the natural wood frame, while providing plenty of comfort.
The stool’s crest is carved from a solid three-inch block of cherry or walnut and is joined meticulously between the extended back legs to form a perfect contour for its occupant, making it a welcome resting spot for meals, homework or conversation. Each crest is an individual canvas, and no two are alike. When the seats line up together the effect is stunning. We’ve added our skill as joiners of wood, but nature has held the paintbrush.
Light in both profile and practice, the Harpswell Stool fits beneath a counter and integrates with companion stools to make the best possible use of precious kitchen real estate.
The Anatomy of The Harpswell Stool
The Crest
The crest of the Harpswell chair bares a signature like no other. Beginning with a solid “twelve-quarter” block of wood- a full three inches thick-is carved on a bandsaw to reveal the growth rings. These swirling grain patterns, often presented in a bull’s eye pattern, create a crest that is an individual canvas, where no two are alike.
The Seat
Designed as much for comfort as for beauty, Harpswell Stools are made with comfortable cushioned seats, which can be upholstered in leather or a wide variety of fabric coverings. The cushion of the Haprswell Chair is a design known as a slip seat. It is constructed in such a way that the cushion gently sits within the frame of the seat.
Strength & Utility
From its straight, hand-finished front legs to its curved rear legs – which extend to support the crest – the Harpswell Stool is a statement in minimalism. Even the chair rails, including a steam-bent curve that supports both sides and back, and a front rail situated for resting feet, are studies in utilitarian beauty.
It’s All In the Details
The Harpswell Stool demonstrates our belief that comfort and beauty can exist together. When designer Tom Moser first explored the collection in his home workshop in Harpswell, Maine, he aspired to a form that leveraged both substance and space.
