In 2008, Yale University announced plans to expand enrollment by opening two new residential colleges. Construction on the Gothic styles of the early 20th-century buildings began in the fall of 2014, followed by a groundbreaking ceremony in April 2015. In April 2016, the university announced the colleges would be named after Pauli Murray, a civil and women’s rights activist and Yale Law School graduate, and Benjamin Franklin, chosen at the request of Charles B. Johnson, a 1954 Yale alumnus who donated in support of the project. The colleges, designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, opened to students in fall 2017.
