NYPL Inwood Branch:

A state-of-the-art library and community hub

The Inwood Library– Joseph and Sheila Rosenblatt Building is Manhattan’s northernmost branch, serving a large, multi-ethnic community. The new space features dedicated areas for adults, kids, and teens—including a new Teen Center with enhanced programming, resources, and technology for young adults; flexible community spaces and quiet study rooms; updated technology and systems; and a new collection of books for all ages.

In addition to the new library space, the energy-efficient building, known as The Eliza, will offer affordable housing, a self-irrigating rooftop garden, and community center programming, including a STEM center, a training kitchen, and a preschool. The library will also host a bilingual program and story hours to bridge the language gap for kindergarten children in the community and ESL classes for adults.

The library, with floor-to-ceiling windows, prominently features furniture designed by Thos. Moser. The NYPL connection with Thos. Moser began in the spring of 2018 when it announced its intention to commission a new and highly anticipated reading chair for the library system’s busiest branch, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL). Thos. Moser was awarded the honor, and since that time, newly renovated branches have incorporated the NYPL Branch chair into their spaces.

“The design of the Inwood Library comes from my own love of libraries, a respect bordering on awe for the NYPL and its ability to continue to provide and extend its mission, and a love for our city and its neighborhoods. This project was truly collaborative, Fogarty Finger Architects and the NYPL being wonderful partners among many. Like the city itself, here the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,” said Andrew Berman, Architect.

In addition to the iconic NYPL branch chair, the Inwood Library is the first branch to pair the NYPL chair with our Syracuse Reading Tables. The expansive study tables feature solid grain-matched boards designed with integrated power and lighting running down the table’s middle, providing unparalleled beauty, functionality, and workability.

At the June 26th ribbon-cutting ceremony, Inwood’s manager Danita Nichols said, “This is a beautiful space, but it isn’t just about the books; connections made through the community give the library life.”

When the new library opened and welcomed the public, it was visible in the faces of its patrons that every community deserves a light and a beacon that serves its neighborhood and offers a welcoming space for learning and quality programming. The excitement and appreciation for this new space were visible in the patrons who waited patiently outside the doors on opening day. Many expressed gratitude for a space like this in their community, where they could connect with their immediate neighbors and literary community worldwide.
