Thoughtfully designed and guaranteed for life.
Featuring a back crest carved from a single piece of American hardwood, each Harpswell Chair reveals the inherent beauty of wood – with visually arresting natural grain patterns that make each piece unique. Crafted with carved, sweeping rear legs that extend to support the back, these chairs feature joinery that eliminates the need for stretchers. The resulting profile is clean, simple, and elegant and celebrates the space they occupy.
Since their introduction, our Harpswell Chairs have earned a loyal following – and extraordinary distinction. In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI and President Bush sat side-by-side in Harpswell Chairs during the official White House welcoming ceremony for the Pope. The chair was again selected for use during a visit to Philadelphia by Pope Francis in 2015. The Harpswell Chair was also specified as a signature piece in the George W. Bush Presidential Center in Dallas, Texas.
Anatomy of the Harpswell Arm Chair
The Crest
The crest of the Harpswell chair bares a signature like no other. Beginning with a solid “twelve-quarter” block of wood- a full three inches thick-is carved on a bandsaw to reveal the growth rings. These swirling grain patterns, often presented in a bull’s eye pattern, create a crest that is an individual canvas, where no two are alike.
The Arms
Arm Chairs connect extended front legs to gently curving, artfully joined arms that integrate with rear risers.
The Seat
Designed as much for comfort as for beauty, Harpswell Dining Chairs are made with comfortable cushioned seats, which can be upholstered in leather or a wide variety of fabric coverings. The cushion of the Harpswell Chair is a design known as a slip seat. It is constructed in such a way that the cushion gently sits within the frame of the seat.
