Apart from its simple, striking profile, the Auburn Stool’s most prominent feature is its curved hardwood back – an anticlastic curve – carved from a single piece of hand-finished wood and supports the lumbar in two directions at once. Its inspiration was a simple cafeteria chair that caught Tom and Mary Moser’s attention on a ferry trip from Maine to Nova Scotia and named after the longtime location of our workshop in Auburn, Maine.

A commitment to perfection.
The Auburn Stool’s curved back supports the lumbar in two directions at once; a geometric detail called an anticlastic curve – like a potato chip.
Appropriate for a variety of environments, the Auburn Stool can be made in two standard sizes to match traditional counter heights. For interiors with different counter heights, the Moser team can customize the stool to fit.
Like all our pieces, each Auburn Stool will be handmade at our workshop in its namesake town of Auburn, Maine, and signed by the craftsperson who made the piece as a seal of quality.
It’s All In the Details
“Whether from my sense of responsibility, my curiosity, or perhaps closer to the truth, from my creative stubbornness in my 81st year, I find myself still drawn to the workbench,” says Tom Moser, the latest result being the Auburn Stool.”
