Caring for Leather

Unique Characteristics of Leather

The inherent characteristics of natural leather make it an attractive choice for upholstery, such as its glove-like feel, warmth, breathability, and unique charm. As a raw material, each piece of leather may vary from the next. The suppleness and fiber density can vary from piece to piece and hide to hide. Leathers may also contain traces of the animal’s life experiences, evidenced by brand marks, wrinkles, and healed scars. These factors, combined with suppleness, can create wrinkles and creases in the leather during the first few weeks or months of use. This is a natural occurrence and should not be a cause for concern.

Although leather is relatively low maintenance, it is not entirely maintenance-free. Follow the recommended furniture care tips below to keep your leather upholstery looking as beautiful as it did when you first purchased it.

Protecting and Cleaning:

On a regular basis, weekly or biweekly, vacuum leather with a drapery nozzle. After vacuuming, if necessary, dampen a clean, soft cloth and wipe the leather with Guardsman Clean & Renew to remove any dust particles that the vacuum may have missed. Leather products are also recommended to be fully cleaned and re-protected every 6-12 months.

Stains & Spills:

  1. Blot immediately with a soft dry cloth
  2. Blot excess moisture and allow the leather to air dry
  3. Do not try to speed up drying time with an iron or hairdryer
  4. Finish with Guardsman Clean & Renew to recondition the leather.

Repeat the process as necessary.

Never Use:

  1. Soaps/Abrasive Cleaners/Alkaline products
  2. Furniture polish
  3. Ammonia water
  4. Bleach
  5. Essential Oil cleaners
  6. Citrus Oil
